Applications of the Gauge Theory / Gravity Correspondence: D-branes and Giant Gravitons
NITheP Seminar on 22 September 2010
NITheP cordially invites you to a seminar by:
Dr. Andrea Prinsloo
National Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stellenbosch
Date: Wednesday 22nd of September 2010
Time: 15:00
Venue: NITheP Stellenbosch Seminar room
TITLE: Applications of the Gauge Theory / Gravity
Correspondence: D-branes and Giant Gravitons
ABSTRACT: Over the last decade, a substantial body of evidence has emerged that various string theories on Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are dual to conformal field theories (CFTs) in flat space. I shall discuss the gauge theory / gravity dictionary, and how long gauge invariant operators become stringy degrees of freedom in the strong coupling regime. I shall mention several specific examples of SYM / type IIB string theory, and SCS-matter / type IIA string theory correspondences. I shall then focus on giant gravitons and topologically stable wrapped D-branes - in particular, those associated with subdeterminant and determinant operators - in the Klebanov-Witten and (more recent) ABJM dualities.
